This mockumentary follows the meteoric rise and fall of pop/rap star Conner4Real (Andy Samberg). From his humble beginnings as one of the Style Boyz, the boy band he started with two childhood friends, to his blazing hot solo career, Conner4Real is on a trajectory that will make him the world’s biggest star (in his own mind anyway). His publicist Paula (Sarah Silverman) is doing her best to make sure that Conner4Real is “Everywhere, like oxygen. Gravity. Clinical depression.” Along the way, Conner4Real starts believing his own press and begins to alienate everyone, including his best friends and the people who made him what he is – his fans. Now his new album isn’t selling, and his shows are no longer sold out, and he’s willing to do just about anything to get back on top – except reunite with the Style Boyz.
While this movie is no “This is Spinal Tap“, it does do an effective job of skewering the pop music industry, making fun of all of the ridiculousness that has become part and parcel of the whole game. It may not be for everyone, but there are plenty of laughs to be had, and lots of cameos. Rated R. Also featuring: Jorma Taccone, Akiva Shaffer, Tim Meadows, Maya Rudolph, Joan Cusack, and Imogen Poots.
