Melanie is 10 years old, and attends school with other “gifted” children just like her. She is very smart, and especially likes doing sums and spelling. She has a crush on her teacher, Miss Justineau. Miss Justineau reads stories to her students, and teaches them about “outside”.
Something seems to be going on at the school, because students are being taken out of class, and then not returning. When they come for her, Melanie makes a daring escape, along with her favorite teacher and a scientist. As the group makes their way through the post-apocalyptic landscape, survival is their main focus. But, as they continue on, they make shocking discoveries, including what caused the infection that has wiped out most of humanity. They also learn about love, trust, and family – things that seem to have been wiped out as well.
Despite whatever else you may read or see about this book (or the movie coming out September 23), this is not “just another” zombie tale. There is so much suspense, you’ll be at the edge of your seat. I read it in one sitting because I just couldn’t put it down – I had to know what happens next! Trust me – you’re gonna want to read this before you see the movie – it’s totally worth it.
