Penelope Deveraux, now Lady Frederick Staines is headed to India with her new husband. He has been named Special Envoy and is to report his findings to Wellesley. Recently married, Penelope is trying to make the best of her marriage. It was not a love match. Their guide is Captain Alex Reid and he would rather be doing anything else but playing baby-sitter to the spoiled Englishman and his bride. Alex may be English by birth but he was raised in India.

Along the way Penelope gets it in her head that someone is out to kill Frederick. Her first suspect is Alex but that just might be her way of deflecting her growing feelings for the Captain. But when a spy named Marigold enters the picture, Penelope is determined to figure out what is going on. Alex is trying to solve the same mystery and he suspects his brother is somehow involved. And when Alex and Penelope start investigating together, the Marigold better watch his back.

And let’s not forget the other story being told. Every couple of chapters, the setting is in the present and focuses on Eloise, a young woman who is in London writing her thesis on the spies of the past. This time she is learning more about her boyfriend Colin and his family.

This is book six of the Pink Carnation series and they just keep getting better and better. The newest book, The Mischief of the Mistletoe, was just released. I am sure it is another winner and I cannot wait to read it!
