The Bucolic Plague by Josh Kilmer-Purcell

Who would expect a moonlighting nightclub drag queen urbanite to decide to become a gentleman goat-farmer?

That is exactly what Kilmer-Purcell and his partner, Dr. Brent Ridge, decided to do when it occurred to him that he simply found desk jockey life more than he could take and so together they purchased a 19th century mansion and its 60 acres…some interesting critters included…in Sharon Springs, N.Y.

It’s enough to make your sides hurt with laughter as he regales the reader with his tales of farm life. Funny , sometimes sweet and sometimes snide, he tells of a goat in labor, mucking stalls, Bubba the cat, the rustic life, attempts at gardening and goat-milk soap, their neighbors, caretaker Farmer John and how he and his partner fall in love with 88 goats and the land.

It’s real, down to earth…literally…and well worth reading for its ability to return us to the land.
